INDIA AND THE EAST.
Fresh Indian taxation is proposed. An income-tax is to be levied on incomes above £50 per annum. The proceeds are estimated at £9,000,000. A loan of 57,000,000 of rupees is to be raised, partly in England. Grain is lower. Government are engaged in relieving the distressed. The Viceroy will not leave for Simla till the end of March. There will probably be a meeting between his Excellency there and AH Khan. The Government of India have decided that the Madras mint shall be closed. At Calcutta exchange on London was as follows: — Bank bills, at six months, .2^ per cent. ; freights were improving. At Bombay, Australian copper was quoted at 45£ to 46 rupees. Exchange on London, at six months' sight, 2£ per cent. Arrival — Delharee, from Sydney.
