The New York papers are discussing the treaty for the settlement of the Alabama claims, as signed in London on Jan. 14, by Lord Clarendon and Mr Keverdy Johnson. President Grant, in response to the formal notification of his election, de-
clared he would faithfully fulfil the duties of his office, and call around him men who would earnestly carry out the principles of economy and honesty, adding that he declined to announce the names of the members of the Cabinet until the nominations should be sent to the Senate. A new tariff bill has been passed, notwithstanding the President's veto. Gold closed at 132 f; highest 133 i ; lowest 132 f sterling. Flour, extra State, 6 dols 45 cents to 7 dols 5 cents ; corn, old mixed, 1 dol 2 cents. The Paraguay war is stated to be over. Lopez was a fugitive in the interior.
