[by electbic telegraph.] Wellington, March 24, 6.50 p.m.

VThe Provincial Council is not likely to vote the £200 for the Koyal reception. The country members object to such a vote while nothing can be done towards making roads. The public meetiog about the reception last night was rather rowdy and cool. The Superintendent was in the chair, and the attendance was large, but there was an entire absence, of leading men. of wealth and position^ Eesolutions to the effect that it was desirable to give the Prince a cordial reception, for the appointment of a committee, and to open subscription lists, were passed; but are not likely to have much effect.

The debate ou the reply to the address is still going on. The second paragraph laments terribly the disas--ters which have befallen the colonists of this island, and attributes the illsuccess of our forces to the improvidence of the present colonial Government in permitting the withdrawal of Imperial troops without any provision for supplying their place by an adequate local force. Mr Borlase moved the omission of all except the expression of regret at past disasters. Messrs Bunny, Pharazyn and Ludlam, strongly supported the reply in its original form. Several other amendments on the address have been moved.
