SKIRMISH WITH THE ENEMY. A GENERAL ENGAGEMENT IMMINENT. This Day, 10.24 a.m. The Wanganui papers of yesterday issued an " Extra" containing information as to a brush with the enemy early the same morning. It appears that a reconnoitering party of the Scouts Corps, when returning to camp, were fired on by a party of the enemy, about 30 strong, on the north bank of the Kaiiwi. Two of our men, Cumming and M'Kenzie, fell dead, and one, Williamson, was wounded. Dr Kelly, with great daring, carried off Cuminiug's body. The other body was also carried ofF, but not till it had been tomahawked. It is supposed that some of the enemy were killed, but it is not known that such was the case. The skirmish took place in sight of Colonel Lyons' sentries. Colonel Whitmore, with a large force,- at once started in pursuit of the enemy, so that a general engagement may take plac$ v
