LATEST FROM THE FRONT.
Wellington, This Day, 11.40 a.m. Late yesterday afternoon, mounted Constable Braithwaite arrived from Wanganui, haying started with dispatches from Colonel Haultain at 2 o'clock the same morning. Braithwate states that before leaving, Kemp, of the Native Contingent, told him Titokowaru had crossed the Wanganui river at Waieke. On passing through Turakina, Braithwaite found the people there in great alarm, the same news as to Titokowaru's movements having reached them, The alarm was all the greater because it was known that the resident Hau-haus beyond Rangitikei have been waiting*sorne time for " inspiration." It was concluded they would join Titokowaru. Colonel Whittnore is still at Woodall's redoubt, nine miles north of Wan- ! ganui. All last night the consternation in Wellington was very great, too many having relatives, friends, and property in the districts threatened by Titokowaru's new movement. Some waited on the Governor, and some on Mr Stafford. Both professed to " know nothing about it," the latter stating that he disbelieved it. The contents of the despatches brought by Braithwaite did not transpire, except that they were dated 7 o'clock on Saturday evening. Whether the news is true or not, it was credited in .Wanganui and Turakiua. The coach will be in tomorrow, and we shall then know the worst. )^ There was a panic in Wanganui on Friday night. It appears that the firing of two guns is the preconcerted signal for rousing the town at the approach of danger. The Sturt and John Perm happened to arrive almost together, and each fired an arrival gun. The panic was very great. At sea the Sturt was found to bo on fire, supposed to have arisen from spontaneous combustion among some packages of oil or waterproof goods. Four hundred friendly Natives on the East Coast recently fell in with fifty mounted rebels. The latter retreated after two of their number had been killed. ■ '
: The St Kilda is in bad order, and j the Ahuriri has been detained on ;he ij East Coast by the Government. fl
