LYTTELTON.
Tuesdat, Nov. 10. The Lyttelton Borough Council held their usual meeting on Tuesday evening, owing to the preceding day having been proclaimed a public holiday. : ' Present — Councillors Allwright, Chalmers, England, Flargreaves, Hawkins, Ward, Willcoz. In the absence of the Mayor, Councillor Ward y as called to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ■■ Tho outward correspondence, consisting of letters to the Railway Engineer, Mr Dobson, asking him to arrange for the supply of tunnel water for the use of the town ; to the Key. J. D. Ferguson, stating that his' complaints with reference to the battling establishment, had. been attended to ; to W. Packard, station master, in reference to the complaint made by him that water < arrier-e emptied certain wells to the great detriment of the liousaholders in their immedinte vicinity, and stating that the Council hoped shortly to mitigate the inconvenience; to his Worship the Mayor of Christchurch, presenting the City Council with the photographs of the Lyttelton Borough Council, ami from his Worship the Mayor, expressing the b'ipe that the present cordial feeling might continue to animate the respective Councils. The inward correspondence was next read and con.-idered, viz., letter from the Provincial Secretary forwarding copy of the case submitted to the Attorney -General to the • Provincial Solicitor in re Municipal Keserves. Letter from Mr 11. H. Knowles, agent for the Union Bank of <\unralia, Lytttlton, giving notice of bis intention to appeal against the valuation of the Bank property in the Kesident Magistrate's Court. In reference to this matter Councillor Chalmers moved, and Councillor England seconded — " That Mr D'Uyly be instructed to defend in re H. 11. Knowles' caee, and that Mr Godfrey be requested to appear ns evidence, to which an amendment was proposed by Councillor Ilargreaves, seconded by Councillor Hawking — *'Tb>*t notice be given to Mr Godfrey to defend the valuation of the Union Bank of Australia and that the Council's solicitor be requested to attend at the Resident Magistrate's Court on behalf of this Council," which was cariied. A letter was read from Mr Wm. '^Idfield, asking the Council to reduce the valuation of his property, which whs £40 in excess of that of last year, notwithstanding the depreciation of property. The clerk was directed to intimate to Mr Oldfield that his not having applied upon tlie day set apart for that purpose, precluded the Council in justice to others from entertnininf his application. The valuer obtained permission to rectify an error made by him, which consisted in Sutting down a propt-rty on section 25, I.on on street, to Mr 1). Davis instead of to Mr* Trounce ; the clerk to nntif\ to Mrs Troune< that such alteration had btf-n made. The report upon the condition of the town lamps and specification for lighting the same, were read and approved, and upon the uiotiou of Councillor Hargreaves seconded bj Councillor Allwright, the Works Committee were requested 10 have the lamps put in proper repair prior to handing them over to the contractor. The following motion, by Councillor Chalmers, was carried. — " For a committee of the whole Council to consider if any and . what changes are desirable in the tenure - and prescribed method ot" dealing with the Borough Reserves," which was seconded by Councillor Ward, on the understanding that that the matter be made the order of the day for Monday next. Councillor YVilkox obtained an extension of time for the Water Supply Committee to bring up their report.
