The Star. MONDAY, NoVember 9, 1868.
The telegraphic n^ws which we publish in another column will be read with a regret approaching to dismay Again the colonial forces have attacked the Natives, and again there is a defeat to record. It is bufi small, satisfaction to learn that the Europeans fought bravely, and that they were well seconded by their Native allies. We expect to hear this, and when, we consider that all the gallantry of the attacking force, aided by the superior resources at their command, failed to | drive the rebels from the position in which they wore entrenched, we instinctively enquire wha^ the end in likely to be The list; of casualties is a heavy one when we bear in mind the numerical strength of the attacking force, and it is especially rnolrtucholy to contemplate the prohablo fate of the unfortunate men who are reported missing. Thnt they have fallen into the hand* of Titokowaru and his savage followers there is too much roanon to fear, and we know wha?. betel those captured after the disaHtrout* fight at Ruaruru. There is some in reading nhat Colonel Wlntmore wan preparing to renew the attack next morning. This shows, at least, that he did not consider himself so Yt*ry badly beaten as the brief narrative would seem to imply. But the fact remains, that the rebels will be proper? i. mutely elated with this fresh victory.
