PROPOSED ROAD THROUGH HIG LEY PARK.
TO THU EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — The citizen of Christchurch are under great obligation to you for nllon-iug so full a discussion of this subject in your columns. A day or two ago a traveller of experience, remarked to me that the most urgent of a 1 reasons in his opinion for forming this long, reserved road has not been alluded to in any correspondence, viz., the excessive amount of traffic there is upon the road from Oilluwaj's into town. It soon becomes dreadful in wet weather, it in the worst part of the road from Christchurdi to I irnaru, and the ro id round by theCHrlton is useless aa a m^ans of relief. If this is the case at present, what will it be when Christchurch becomes, as tlie IU-v v S. Jackson says, it will become " a large city." I commend this view of the au* j.-<;t t<> the reverend gentleman, who by tt>e way m^i not fear thai the Park will sufFer at a/i «.t the hands of the promoters of the formation of this road. I presu eMr It i\l. Marten did not tell the meet ng at Prebbieton that his interests in Ohriaterhurch are »<>uth o the line, and that he naturally is making cotimuu cause with the ' rimgle and its environs.V ;t ia useless reasoning with the southerns 'on this subject ; they have (erroneously in my belief) trot it into their heads that they will suffer In a business point of yew if this direct road is made, and will not thi-r« fore look intd" th" matter in a fair «pirii. First, they are horrified at the idea of «p ■< \\w\\ the people's park. Shew them that it will be the first step in the process of opening uf. th<Park, and they then fly to the proie-lion <>f the people's pockets— when driven out of i his position, by being told that rates are not required, they are more enraged than ever — they are like the Frenchman, who when told that the facts were against hijju exclaimed, " So much de worse for do facts^j The road, I believe, will b made by private subscription, if consent for it is given, and made hand omely too. I for one will ne'er believe until T see if, that the auihori ties will refuse to have this road made for the province when it v to cost them nothing. Your obedient servant, VBNTILATOR.
