PROPOSED ROAD THROUGH HAGLEY PARK. TO THB EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir,— Hitherto, I have not seen the Star regularly. 1 did not therefore see the letter signed " A Resident" in your issue of the 18th inst,, on tho above subject, suggesting a bridge over the Avon in Worcester street, instead of Arnisgh street, until it was pointed out to me. Allow me through your columns to say that I am ready to subscribe the same amount towards the scheme on this basis, as with a bridge as first proposed across Armagh street at the Government Buildings. Ia fact, I do not make the two bridges a sine qua non at all. I think any one who looks at the map of Christchurch must see that the original intentiou was to bridge the river at all the streets which it intersect., so that each of them may be continued from belt to belt, and that the carrying out of this intention is only a question of time and money. It seems to me a pity that the Government Buildings, the Judge's Chambers, and very soon the Supreme Court, should be kept in an out-of-the- way place, instead of in a direct thoroughfare, because the citizens south of Cathedral b'quare will not do justice to those who live north of it, for fear of a possible loss to themselves. Doubtless there are a few people honestly of opiuion that it will injure the Park to let a road pass through it, but there are, no doubt, many whose opposition can hardly be referred to this cause. lam ready to go in for making the proposed road highly ornamental, and to make the Park es soon as possible the people's Park in something more than i ame. Tim, along wih a genuine Saturday half holiday lur all classes, would be, in my humble opinion, a great blessing to Christchurch. Your obedient servant, JOHN LEWIS. Cookham House Che ml ers, October 30, 1868.
