THE HAGLEY PARK ROAD MEETING.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB. Sib, — I hope you will allow me a space in your paper for a few lines respecting the meeting that took place at the Criterion Hotel on Tuesday night, to take into consideration the advisability of having a road through Uagley Park. Most people will agree that it would be a boon to all. The resolutions passed at the meeting make it one of a partisan character. I think Dr Turnbull might have worded his amendment to express that the road should continue from the north side of the Avon in Armagh street to the liiccarton road by Dilloway's, and that a traffic bridge should be erected over the Avon in Worcester street, so that a short detour in Durham strtet to the left or right, •would take you over Victoria bridge to that end of the town one way, or over Worcester street bridge, to the centre of the town the other way.
> To put a feridge over Armagh street, ao i near the other two bridges, I cannot suppose i the Council would entertain an id«a of. Tou may as well nsk them to corer in the whole of the rirer in that particular locality, so that ■ they may have the Market-place an undivided piece of ground. With due deference to the i two gentlemen belonging to the Council, who seem to be the most active parties in the scheme, I cannot see how they can urge their views with any kind of consistency, living as they do in that locality. It is the duty of public men to look at the broad interest of the people generally. Worcester street bridge was washed away by the late flood, and has had nothing done to it, and it has been a great inconvenience to many, and a drawback to the owners of property on the north side of the river more espe ially, although they are obliged to subscribe their share of taxes. I believe if a traffic bridge over Worcester street is considered, in conjunction with the road through Hagley Park, that the public will largely support it. Unless it is, I cannot sic how the city or any Council can support it. The Mayor lms been accused before now of partiality ; but no act can point at him so glaringly as this of his two brother Councillors in advocating the making of a bridge over Armagh street. Your obedient servant,' A RESIDENT.
