Monday, September 7. The usual weekly meeting was held this evening, at 7 o'clock. Present— His Worship the Mayor, and i ouncillors Thompson, Duncan, Ruddenklau, Calvert, Sheppard, Jameson, Tomb*, and Anderson. Tiie minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Clerk announced receipt o £221 7s l<*d duriug the week, and au existing overdraft at the bank of £433 6s lld. Accounts amounting to £191 12s 9J were passed and ordered to be paid. The Surveyor reported that the fencing on the East town belt from the Ferry Road to the South town belt had been completed daring the past week, but that a few panels were left open for cart traffic v .til the weather pcrmit6 of the small bridge in Madras street being transferred to the south -drain. The contractor for the treuching is also progressing with his work, and will probably complete it during the present week. Whilst considering these matters, the Surveyor • le-sired that some instructions miaht be giren as to the manner in which tiie Council would have the plantations on the Town belt, kept in order during the spring and summer, as they will require a gre.it deal of attention during the first few months. The continued wet weath'.'r hnd materially delayed the formation of ihe East town belt, but the whole would be competed in about three <veeks, if attended by favourable circumst inces. The Post-offlce, Courthouse, Weighbridge Office, and other buildings belonging to the Council very much required re-painting, and instructions were requested respecting them. Attention was • ailed to the almost impassable state of Mdi.bury street between Durham and < Colombo streets, and instructions were desired thereon. The cost of forming would be about £25 The labour gang had been employed during the week in filling in Dr Barker's section, fencing in the plantations on the East town belt, shingling footpaths at the Mechanics' lustitute and Ferry Road, clearing out side channels, and repairing streets with shingle. The report was discussed seriatim. In ref erring** to the plantanons, Councillor Jameson m *ved that any decision a* to the m inner in which they were to be kept in order should bo deferred. He did not think immediate steps necessary, and ha should very probably move at a future meeting, that the work lie done by contract. The motion was seconded by Councillor Duncan, and carried. The painting aud repairing of the Court Houae, and other buildings was referred to the Public Works Committee. A discussion ensued on the clause referring to Salisbury street, but Councillors Jameson, Duncan, and Sheppard, speaking to the urgency of the matter, tenders were ordered to be invited for the work. the remaining clauses of the report were approred. The following correspondence was read ; — Letter from the hon. Secretary of the Fire Police, intimating the election of Mr Cole as Fire Inspector, and r. questing that the Mayor would ratify it in the manner ..tipulnted by the Ordinance. His Worship informed the Council that he had already complied witli the request. Letter from Mr R. Beattie, calling attention to the bad state of the footpath in Manchester treet, near hia premises. The subject of the letter wai referred to the surveyor with a request to report upon it. A carrier's license was granted to W. H. Thorne. Councillor Sheppard, iv referring to the coming election, said it was incumbent upon .he Council to accord their thanks to the members about to retire, for the able services they had rendered during their term of office, and he had great pleasure in moving a resolution to that effect. He looked back with much gratification to the amicable and friendly spirit wbich had prevailed during the-ir connection. Councillor Jamuion seconded the resolution. The • 'rdinance necessitated the retirement of the genilemtn whose services were about to terminate, but it did not prevent the feeling of regret which he was sure the remaining members of the Council felt at the separation. Councillor Calvert supported tbe motion, which was carried unanimously and suitably acknowledged. A desultory conversation, bearing upon tht election, ensued, after which the Council adjourned.
