Commercial.

♦ The Slai- Oflice, This Day. The land sales to-;iay amounted to 150 acres, as follows: — Upper Ohristchureh, 20 acres ; Maudeville, 30 ; Oxford, 50 ; Malvern, 50. Breadstuff's have evinced a tendency to improve during the past few days, and Australian advices have caused a slight reaction in oats. Wheat may now be quoted at 6s 6d, for which sum a parcel of 1500 bushels changed hands during the latter part of last week, and oats will procure a slight advance on our last week's quotation. Barley is more generally enquired for, but there is little or none obtainable in the market. Otago. — The Daily Times of September 5 reports : — The market for breadstuffs has been characterised by great tameness throughout the month. No foreign supplies have been received, nor is there any prospect of anything of importance coming forward ; yet in the early part of the month the value of flour was not maintained, and now, though greater firmness attends the value, our quotations are not equal to those of the sth ult. The small demand for flours has prevented business in wheats, and the limited sales effected have been at rather easier rates. Oats are without any change for the better, and barley only in moderate request. Closing quotations are : — Provincial^ flour (town brands), large bags, £17 ; small bags, £18 ; small j bags, £18 10s ; country brands have been sold at rather lower rates ; bran, 1 s ; fair samples of wheats, farmers' parcels, 7s 3d to 7s 6d ; barley fit for malting, 4s 3d ; oats, 2s 5d to 2s 6d ; maize, none ; new Patna rico, £30 ; dressed Java rice, £34 ; oatmeal, £\ 6. Adelaide. — The Register of the 21st has

the following report on the Btate -of the markets: — At length there is an improvement to note in the produce markets. During the last day or two there has been a considerable inquiry for wheat, both for export and home use, and owing to the very small quantity offering, the value has increased. Some sales of flour have been made, and altogether a better feeling prevails both here and in the neighbouring colonies. Flour — A few hundred tons have been sold at current rates. The value is about £17 10s to £18 10s per ton. Wheat has been iv demand. Some inquiries have been made for export, but no: lung has yet been done, for no parcels can be got under 7s 6d to 8s per bushel. For small lots there have been local buyers at about 7s per bushel, but there is now none offering. Melbourne. — The Argus of Aug. 28 reports : — The import markets still continue to maintain an unsatisfactory and quiet look, though occasional transactions come under our notice which evince a desire on the part of dealers to purchase on a larger scale did the aspect of trade generally justify more extensive operations. The improvement noted in breadstuffs is confirmed by further enquiries for flour ; trade sales have been effected at £18 freely, while we hear of a line of 125 tons having changed hands at £17, and for a parcel of one hundred tons in another instance a somewhat better price was realised. Wheat is wanted at Bs.
