MAORI SCHOOLS’ BASKETBALL
PAROA WINS NGARETA HENERE MEMORIAL SHIELD
Eight schools were represented at the first annual basketball tournament for: .the Ngarota Ifenere Memorial Shield held at Pukehina on Saturday. At the conclusion of an interesting series of games, witnessed by a good crowd of spectators, including Mr and Mrs Whili. the donors of the Shield. Mrs W. McDougall. wile of the chairman of the Pukehina school committee, presented the coveted trophy to the captain of the unbeaten Paroa team.
Afterwards, in a short speech, Mr Ilauesier (headmaster of Paroa School) returned thanks on behalf of the visitors. commending the local committee and teachers on their organisation of the event. The day's proceedings were opened and closed by action songs of welcome and farewell given by'Pukehina and Paroa pupils, respectively. During the play in the morning, yeoman service was rendered by Misses E. and G- Fuggle and L. Baikie (members of the Te Puke Basketball Association) in the capacity of referees.
