Extra Bus Service To Tauranga Mooted

SUGGESTION FOR EARLY MORNING AND EVENING

TRIAL ADVISED BY TAURANGA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A proposal to establish a bus service ltd ween Te Duke 'hid Tun rail ga to provide for workers, was. received from tlie Rotorua branch manager of the New Zealand Railway Road Services at a meeting of the Tauranga Chamber of (.’ommerce. r J’he branch manager asked the chamber to investigate the possibilities of obtaining employees for Tauranga business houses from the. areas which the bus would serve.

It -had been proposed by a member at hn earlier executive meeting of the chamber that the service should cater for other passengers for Tauranga in addition to workers.

Mr C. Davey: The potential market is hardly there. The whole situation is such that a service is not warranted; but a bus coming in from Te Puke and picking up passengers on the way would be of considerable benefit to Tauranga.

Mr Davey moved a that the chamber thank the New Zealand Railway Road Services for its interest in suggesting a service, but that the possibilities of a passenger bus service from Te Puke should be investigated closely.

The President (Mr M. E. Dervan 1; We really do not require' a morning bus service to' Tauranga because there ■iready is one. But the return trip at ’.30 p.m. is too early. I would suggest he inauguration of a later service to Te Puke.

Mr E. S. Hylton moved that' the chamber write to the bus service official saying that if the service proposed him was given a fair trial if would have the; chamber's support.

It should be of benefit to the workers and the public too, he said.

Mr F. N. Christian: The present service cannot be altered because it provides for a school bus. However, we cannot overlook the fact that more workers will be needed here in time to come.

Mr R. 'S. Wilson: There should be a bus from the hospital at sp.m. for employees whose homes are fit the. Tc Puke district.

Mr J. B. Discaciati recommended that the chamber get in touch with Te Puke in order to have its opinion on the question.

A motion of Mr Christian was carried that the official be advised that the chamber considered it would be wise for him to test the economic advantage of such a service leaving Te Puke at 7.15 a.m. and returning from'Tauranga at 5.15 p.m.
