ATTRILL CUP
DETAINED BY TAURANGA
Un Sunday last the Pongukawa cricket Uiufi travelled to Tauraiiga to play a challenge match 101 live Alt nil Cup. The weather was* grand tor cricket with, very mile breeze.
iauranga batted first, opening very coundeiitly. Dame lfortune, now ever, was not with the Ponguiviiwii team as catches were being dropped more often than taken, Pougakuwa’s fielding as first was rather scratchy, but improved a lot as tiie day went *Oll.. The bowling was consistent, but 13'. Budd .md 15. Lyon were very aggressive and scored all round 'the wicket, on a fast outfields. R. Cong worth was the most successnil bowler, securing six wickets for DU runs and secured the “hat trick" with his last three balls.
Pongakawa’s inuings . was rather unlucky as V. Tunnicliife, who was batting steadily, was run out early in the game, to.be followed by D. Searle, who was run out a few balls later. This left a heavy load for the balance of the team, J. Reid being dismissed early by a good catch taken by I). Sinclair right off his bat. At the tea adjournment Pongakawa had lost 5 wickets for '69 runs. A valuable partnership by D. I alder and E. Capon carried their score to 115, when Voider was bowled by Stapleton, . who •was Tauranga’s most successful bowler. Capon played a brilliant innings and it was not until the (•lose of the.day when runs were needed that he gave any chances, one of which was given off a ball by Budd.
Pongakawa have been very unlucky in all the Cup games but will, no doubt, improve later. The umpires were Mr Wilson, of Tauranga,'and Mr Smith, of Gisborne. The scorer was Mr P. Pickett, of Tauranga. » Scores:— TAURANGA
