PENE WINS BAY OF PLENTY CHAM PR)NSIIIP BRANCH SWIMS BACKSTROKE A feature of the Tauranga Swimming Club's carnival held in the Te Puke Memorial Paths last week, was the Hay of Plenty open 50 yards championship. In (he first heat -Hartley (Tauranga) jusl heat K. Watson of Tc Puke in 2ft seconds. In the second heat Pene (Rotorua) heat I branch (Dot mam), the lat ter swimming backstroke-, this time also being AS seconds. In the final Pene heat Hartley in a close finish-, with .Watson a touch behind, the win-, ning time being 27 seconds. Branch is a national - champion backstroke swimmer, hut later in Die programme he showed himself to he very fast with the usual overarm stroke.
M. Keys was prominent in hen Is ovcf various distances and events but could not achieve a first final placinp thouph she pul everythin#' into it. She pained a second and a third.. The nipht was a very cold one compel ed. H McCarthy was third and very few Te puke swimmers in I lie junior dive. The- Tauraupa Club extended thanks I o Ihe Te Puke Club for the use of its baths end to the crowd who supported them by at lendinp. Mr \V. Whareatu pave a demonstration of freestyle and backstroke swiimninp and demon - st rated the amazinply quick somersanll turn. lie was piyeti a poosl round of applause.
