LEAP FROM TRAIN
MAN INJURED AT TE PUKE When an elderly man travelling to Te Puke by the Taneatua express on Friday evening last leapt from the train after it had left the station, he sustained a broken shoulder and cut 3 on the head, necessitating his removal to the Tauranga Hospital. The injured man was Mr Fairbrother, a brother of Mrs H. Innes, of Manoeka, whom he was visiting. The injured man had overslept and had not become aware of reaching his destination until the train had left the station.. No one at the station saw the accident, but several passengers noticed the last-minute leap, and informed the guard who telephoned the Te Puke railway station from Paengaroa, The staff at Te Puke were about to commence a seaich when Mr Fairbrother appeared after staggering about five chains down the line. He received immediate attention and was taken to hospital. Apparently the victim had struck the rails as he landed sustaining the injuries as stated. At latest reports Mr Fairbrother ’"as progressing favourably.
