HOSPITAL RATING

COUNTIES’ CONFERENCE MR H. LEWIS CONVENOR. The progressive increase in hospital rates is a matter which is causing considerable concern to County, Councils throughout New Zealand, and' in this connection close attention has been_ given to a question by the Tauranga County Council. The County Clerk, Air H. Lewis, reported to the County Council on bYday: “The Council’s remits in respect of hospital rating and ragwort eradication for consideration at the Counl'es’ Conference, have gone forward. Twei-’e other counties have sent in remits regarding the first item— seven for MuGovernment to provide from the ( onsolidated Fund or by means or lott- ry; three for consideration in basing the levy on population; two on the £2 for £1 basis; one for stabilisation at the 1908 figure, the balance to be made up from the Social Security Fund. “I have received word that in respect of hospital rating, four County Clerks are asked to assist in the committee work of the Conference—myself for this County—and as convenor, with the Clerks of Marlborough, Woodville and Vincent County Councils.’’

The fact that Mr Lewis has been appointed convenor goes to prove that Ins grasp of the subject has been recognised by the excutive of the Counties’ Association, and we feel certain that he will be able to assist in the presentation of a strong case for the relief of county ratepayers.
