Actually he did have eight children, and eight furlongs do make a mile. Crash into Pole. A party of motorists travelling from Te Puke to Whakatane on Sunday morning had a narrow escape from serious disaster, The car, a Chevrolet, was driven by a young man named Russell Baker, of Te Puke, and there were two other occupants. When about one and ahalf miles on the other side of Matata the car left the road and ploughed through the road until it struck a telegraph pole. This was broken off near the ground and nearly all the wires snapped necessitating a hurried visit by the linesmen’s gang from Whakatane to effect repairs. The front part of the car was badly damaged ,by the im* pact, biit, strange to say, not a pane of glass in the car was broken nor one of the occupants injured.
