Daffodil And Spring Flower Show

A Fine Display

Tbe second Daffodil and Spring Flower Show under the auspices of the local Horticultural Society, was held in McDowell’s Hall on Tuesday and was quite as successful as its promoters anticipated. It was pleasing to note that the blooms, more particularly in the Daffodil classes, showed a decided improvement on those exhibited last year, this no doubt being largely due to the informative address on the culture of daffodils delivered by the Rev. Witheford from time to time and to growers obtaining bulbs of well known varieties. Some exceedingly fine specimens were on view and were greatly admired and it is evident that competition in future years will be very keen. In the cut flower section the entries of stocks made by Mrs T. Tanner and Miss Watson were magnificent arid the ranunculus, hyacinths, anemones and polyanthus were very fine. First prize for a collection went to Mrs Bostock. The decorative section was also very attractive, there being numerous entries in the different classes. The arrangements forthe Show were excellent, the blooms being shown to the best advant* age. . , Mr Tibbs, of Tauranga, judged the daffodil and cut flower sections and Mrs Bruce Beale, also of Tauranga, the decorative sed* tion. The Rev Witheford Waß successful in winning both the Daffodil Gup presented by Mrs T. H. Wiisone 'and the trophy presented by the Farmers Trading Co. The attendance during the afternoon was quite good, but in the evening was meagre. Afternoon tea was provided by the members of the Plunket Society and a brisk business was done, a substantial sum being netted towards the Society’s funds.
