REFUND ON BENZINE

FIRST PAYMENTS NEXT MONTH PROVISIONS OF THE ACT Provision is made in the Motor Spirits Taxation Act, 1927, for the refund of Customs duty payable on motor spirit, and such refuuds will be made quarterly. The refunds apply only to motor spirit used for certain purposes defined by the Act, inclusive of benzine used for {milking machines and general farm work, launches and motor vehicles used by local bodies in the maintenance of roads.

Customs duty must be paid on all motor spirit imported. The duty—4d per gallon —is included in the retail price to consumers. No exemptions are granted in the payment of the duties, but provision is made for consumers to get refunds of duty on spirit used for purposes other than as fuel for a motor vehicle on which jannual license fee is payable. Refunds will be made quarterly —that is, for the quarters ending March, JunejSeptember and December in each year. The first application is due on March 31st next. A special form is being printed and will shortly be distributed to all post offices in the Dominion.

Application must be made, through postmasters, to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, Wellington, within 90 days of the date of consumption of the benzine. Each application must be accompanied by invoices or receipts covering the purchase of the motor spirit consumed during the quarter.
