SPRING CLEANING HINTS.
Upholstered Furniture. If the furniture is covered with serge, tapestry, and similar fabrics, first beat and brush it well. Mix two parts of spirits of wine with one part of ammonia. Make ; swab of soft rags by folding two or three together, dip this in the spirits of wine solution and rub the upholstery vigorously with it. As the rag becomes soiled turn it or use a clean piece. For Woollen Velvets. Boat and brush it very well. Obtain 1 ox gall from the butcher, and mix it with a pailful of cold water. Wring a cloth out in this solution, and wipe the furniture over with it. Kinsc the cloth out several times during the process, wringing it as dry as possible each time. I?ub again with a dry cloth. ■* * * For Silken Fabrics. Brush very thoroughly with a soft brush. Make a- swab of old rags, moisten it with benzine and rub the materials with it. Care must be taken not to allow a naked light 'anywhere near the benzine, a« it is highly inflammable. Too much benzine must not be put in the swab, as very little will revive the colour of the" upholstery. * * * To Remove Stains. Make a thick paste of fuller's earth and cold water. Spread this on the stains, and leave it to dry thoroughly, then brush off with a clean brush. Sometimes a second application is necessary, if the stains arc old. When a suction of vacuum cleaner is available, the first cleaning of-the furniture is done by its aid. Upholstered furniture so cleaned each week remains clean for a long period. 9 9> ®> PARLEY-VOUS FRANCAIS? She was stylishly dressed. The waiter handed her a bill of fare written in French, and said, "Please mark off the dishes you wish to order." Could a woman dressed in the height of fashion confess that she was unable to read French? Taking a pencil, she made a few dashes, and the order read: "July 20," "Vegetables," "Please pay at the desk."". The waiter brought her a beefsteak and chip potatoes. She did not raise a word in protest.
