QUITE the social event of the past week was the annual ball of the Garrison Officers' Club, which event has become one of the principal social functions of the season. The ball was held in the Drill Hall, the whole of the large building being transformed, by the aid of tasteful and beautiful decorations, and artistic furnishing, into a splendid dancing hall. The guests were received by Colonel and Mrs Wolfe, bhe hostess wearing a beautiful gown of pale yellow brocade, finished with lace ; Mrs A. M. Myers was daintily gowned in pale blue ; Mrs Duthie wore a beautiful creme silk gown, finished with chiffon ; Mrs W. R. Bloomfield, lovely white and pink flounced siiii, relieved with silver tissue and pale blue ; Mrs Alfred Nathan, beautiful black lace dress, over white silk ; Miss Natlian looked sweet in white taffeta, relieved with gold.

The engagement is announced of Miss Mary j ackman, eldest daughter of Mr W. H. Jackman, of Whakapirau, to Mr Hardy Hemphill, Maungaturoto, Kaipara.

The Presbyterian Church, Te Awamutu, was the scene of a pretty wedding on Wednesday, August 7th, the contracting couple being Miss Jessie Brown, second daughter of Mr and Mrs R. B. Brown, and Mr Frank Bowden, second son of the late Mr C. A. Bowden. The church was beautifully decorated by young friends, and was filled with an interested congregation. The Rev. Mr Panting officiated. The bride was given away by her father, and looked very winsome and dainty in a pretty white dress. She was attended by her cousin, Miss Davey, of Parnell, and Mr Walker, of Cambridge, acted as best man. A large party of relatives and friends were later entertained by Mr and Mrs Brown at their residence, ' ' Matarika," when the customary toasts were proposed and responded to.

The engagement is announced of Miss Cissy Wilkinson, only daughter of Mr W. Wilkinson, Devonport, to Mr F. H. Hutchinson, of Auckland, formerly of Christchurch.

The marriage of Mr Norman K. Taylor, of Bushy Park Estate, Waikato, with Miss Kate Linton, eldest daughter of the late Mr John McNicol, was solemnised on Tuesday, July 16th, at her mother's residence, Burnside, Hukanui, before an assemblage of relatives and friends. The ceremony, which was partly choral, was performed by the Rev. E. Adams, and the bride was given away by her uncle, Mr A. McNicol, of Clevedon. The bride's dress was of ivory taffeta chiffon, the skirt being full and trimmed with lace flounces. The corsage was trimmed with the same lace, and silk folds in Vandyke fashion. The attendant bridesmaid was the bride's sister, Miss Marion McNicol, who was dressed in a frock of Persian lawn, and the groomsman was Mr Innes Taylor, of Bardowie. The bride's travelling dress was of brown cloth, and she wore a white felt toque, trimmed with chenille.

The engagement is announced of Miss Edith Ewing, eldest daughter of Mr Robert Ewing, St. Clair, Dunedin, to Mr Eustace Macassey, second son of the late Mr James Macassey, also of Dunedin.

The marriage of Miss Mary Black, daughter of Mr Robert Black, Ohiwa, and Mr Stewart Parkinson, son of Mr Alfred Parkinson, Otara, was celebrated in the Presbyterian Church, Opotiki, on Wednesday morning, July 17th. The Rev. G. M. Macdona|d officiated. The bride was given away by her father, and wore a pretty heliotrope dress trimmed with lace, and lace bolero, hat to correspond, and she carried a beautiful bouquet. Miss Janey Black attended her sister in a pretty blue costume, and white hat trimmed with blue. Mr Andrew Black acted as hest man.

A very pretty wedding was solemnised by the Rev. Mr Langley, at at St. Phillip's Church, Sydney, on July 24th, when Miss Julia May Hill, second daughter of Mr Thomas Hill, of Hamilton, was married to Mr Ernest James Heme, of Berrellan, Shoalhaven, N.S.W. The bride was tastefully attired in a white silk dress, with court train, trimmed with white silk and orange blossoms, and wore an embroidered veil. She carried a beautiful shower bouquet. Miss Marie Heme, sister of the bridegroom, was in attendance as bridesmaid, and wore creme silk, trimmed with lace and chiffon, with floral hat to match. The best man was Mr J. Barr, of Sydney. After the ceremony a reception -was held, where the bride and bridegroom received the hearty good wishes from bheir friends. The bridegroom's present to the bride was a sapphire arid diamond ring, and a . Nellie Stewart bangle ; and to the bridesmaid a ruby and pearl brooch. The happy couple left on their honeymoon trip, which will be spent in the Blue Mountains. The bride's travelling dress was of dark brown velvet, trimmed with white satin and lace insertion,- and a dainty hat to match.
