■jniAST WARD EL E C T I O N. Ladies and Gentlemen,— The following is a Copy of a Letter sent by Mr, Peter Oliphant to the City Couucil. It speaks for itself, requiring no comment from us.' Notwithstanding the apparent favouritism shown to his opponent, Mr Johu McLeod, we have every hope of placing our Candidate, Mr Peter Oliphaut, at the head of the Poll. H e lives in the Ward, passing through it daily, and sees what ."great need there is for many improvements therein. By; Order of his Committee. . . E..W. PAGE. TO THE MAYOR AND COUNCILLORS OF AUCKLAND. RE EAST WARD ELECTION. CiEXTLEME.N,— In domnion with the retiring Candidate, Mr Beehan, I protest against the issue of another Supplementary Roll on the ground that when I also entered this contest I made freqnent inquiries at the town clerk's office, and on each occasion was informed that the Roll then existing (which comprised the Main Roll and the two Supplementary Rolls of April and July last) would be the Roll governing this Election. lam therefore surprised to hear that your Council have agreed to issue another Supplementary Roll — a Roll which, I am told, largely comprises names giyen in on behalf of mv opponent, Mr John McL^od. Such a Supplementary Roll can, therefpre, only advantage Mr McLeod, and is unfair to me, who was denied an opportunity to put in the names of many friends who are well entitled to vote. Notwithstanding this unfortunate episode, I am Ktill resolved to go to the Poll, doing my best to win, asking only a fair field and no favour. I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, Your Obedient Servant PETER OLIIMIANT. Auckland, August 12, 1901. If AS T \V AR I) EL E < ' TUIX.
