MERCURY BAY

The annual winter meeting of the Mercury Bay Jockey Club was held here on Saturday, 28rd May. The day proved an excellent one, to the delight of all, especially the gate-keeper, who paid a bigprice for the gates. On the field, there was roend of bookies arid gamblers of every description. The fields were very good, as there were many outside horses competing, but the greater < vents were won locally. The Kuaotunu Band was in afrte a dance, and made things a little lively. In the evening, the crowd was attracted to the Mill Hall by Kuaotunu talent, assisted by some local people, who professed to give a first class concert. A dance followed, Mr G White officiating as MC. Weren't AN and FT doing the amiable at the races ! . .Ted says itis a very simple matter for him to break horses in to follow him, but he admits he canrot ao so with the young ladies of MB. He seemed quite dejected at the races because H D was down. ..The rink is in full swing again, under the management of Messrs White and McGregor. They have made one improvement since they took it over, and that is in the lights. The next one they want to make is in the skatea, and then to stop the young folk from darting about the floor, as the ladies do not care to skate when they are doing 50... The ladies of M B say they think very little of the bachelors, as they know the bachelors think very little of them, otherwise they would have given them a return to the leap-year ball, held here over three months ago. ] f they don't give it this year, they will give it next, so never despair.
