THE DOROTHY BALL
■ Seldom, if "ever, has the Choral Hall presented a more - brilliant, and gorgeous spectacle than it did last Friday evening, on the occasion of the Dorothy fancy dress ball, to conclude the present season. Every inch of space in the galleries was crowded with, spectators, and even then many could not obtain admittance. The hall itself was completely transformed by artistic -combinations of Chinese lanterns and fans, and picturesque displays of flags and. gauzy material of many bright and striking colours. The credit for the decorations is due to the committee, which consisted of Messrs A. Marriage, E. Noonan, P. "White, and R. Noonan (hon. sec), and which was assisted in this particular work by Miss Cantlon and. Mr W. Cole. Quite 150 couples took part in the grand march, which was led by Miss Todd," suitably attired as 4 Dorothy,' and Mr W. Cole, as the ' Earl of Willowdale.' The movements of the march were admirably executed, and the effect while the moving pageant was on the floor was singularly striking and beautiful. Musical effects assisted towards the success of the march, and in these Mr Robert Reid, on the trombone, and Mr Brinsden, on the drums, gave valuable help. There were 22 dances on the programme, and by the way, these programmes, supplied from the Observer office, were charming specimens of the typographic art, and unquestionably the most chaste and beautiful that have been seen in Auckland this season. Messrs Marriage (violin), Meredith (piano), Gribben (cornet), and Edmonds (bass violin), supplied delightful music, and the M.C's, all very capable, were Messrs E. Noonan, P. White, T. White, and W. Cole. We must not omit to mention the splendid supper supplied by Mr W. H. Philips, which was a considerable element in ministering to^the pleasure of the guests.
It would be quite useless to attempt the selection of a belle. Any one of twenty ladies might have been the belle, for they all looked well, and in such a crowd it was difficult even to pick out the twenty. At the same time, however, there were several who especially attracted attention. For instance, Miss -Callaghan looked charming as a Court Lady, in an exquisitely made pink brocaded satin trained dress, resplendant with spangles. Miss Todd, in the conventional Dorothy costume, looked very well. Miss Grace Blomfield, as Sunflower, wore a lovely costume of pale yellow, the admirable effect of which was completed by a pretty sunflower hat and fan. Another lady, evidently representing 'Erin,' was attired in a beautiful white and green satin, with a gold harp worked on the skirt and shamrocks round the bodice. Miss L. Callaghan, as United States, also looked well, while Mrs Tapper was elegantly attired in a cream satin and lace evening dress, which suited her admirably. However, here is a list of those present and their costumes as nearly complete as I have been able to get it : — Mr R. Noonan, King Louis XIV. Mr B. Noonan, Gentleman of the 19th century. Mr P.
