Paruell

The contest- in this electorate was fought fairly and with good spirit on both sides. It was expected ' that Mr Lawry would win, but in view of the fact that he had the temperance, religious and Conservative votes against him the result was expected to be pretty close. There were some, who held the opinion that the female vote would also be largely against Mr Lawry, but in this they made a mistake. Without doubt, he had a goodly majority of the women. Parnell gave Mr Lawry a substantial lead, but when Mount Eden returns came in the issue Beemed to be uncertain. However, Newmarket eventually placed all doubts at rest in a very decided way, and Mr Lawry was elected by a substantial majority.

There was much in Mr Allen's methods of conducting this contest, and in the manly way in which he acoepted his defeat, that has commended him to the high opinion of the people of Parnell. After the result was announced, Mr Lawry came forward and called for three cheers for his opponent, and these were heartily given. Mr Allen then made a graceful little acknowledgment, speaking a few generous words of Mr Lawry and promising all the assistance he could render to the new member. This was as it should have been. Mr Allen made hosts of friends amongst those who heard his manly little speech, and the wish of these will be lhat he may yet find his way into our Parliament.
