The Returning Officer.
Just one word in addition concerning the .Returning Officer. The task of controlling the arrangements for such extensive polling as took plaoe was no easy one, bat Mr Halyday was equal to every emergency. More than sixteen thousand electors exercised the franchise, and the
whole of this was done peaceably and quietly under the supervision of Mr Halyday and bis deputies. His arrangements were admirable, ample conveniences were provided, and there was no hitch nor ground lor complaint in the whole day's proceed ings. The result shows without doubt that in Mr Halyday the Government have placed the right man in the right place. From the out-districts, we learn that Mr Bobertshaw at Parnell, Mr Bush at Manukau, and Mr Gilmer at Eden carried out their duties in such a way as to give com. plete satisfaction to the candidates and the public alike. All these appointments have proved excellent ones.
