PORT ALBERT.

The weekly meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society took place on Saturday evening, July 2nd, when there was a poor attendance on account of the inclemency cf the weather. The following was the programme gone through ; Mr Geo. Collar, recitation ' The Monkey and the Nuts;' Miss Steventon, reading ' Stamps ' which was very interesting ; Mr R. A. Partington, recitation called ' An old Halt's Yarn.' A musical treat was the next item in the shape of a duet by two young ladies, Miss W. Hartnell and Miss B. Ingpr. The piece was rendered in an einoient manner. Mr R. Walker gave a very lengthy reading on Woman's Rights, which was well criticised, but the female members were as usual very backward in the criticism. Mr T. Gubb also gave a speech on ' Woman's Franchise ; ' after a lengthy discussion the meeting closed.

The Port Albert Band of Hope took place in the Church, on July stb. The weather was beautifully fine, and I was surprised to see such a small attendance. A lengthy programme was gone through, each item being given in good style. Mr F. Mander was in the chair, and acted efficiently. The priacipal items were a reading and short speech by Mr O'Connell. A reading (from Dr. Eichardson's Book on Temperance) by Mr B. M. Gubb. Miss Becroft gave a reading which was good, whilst Mr R. Partington recited and joined the society. There were several other items well given, but space in your paper prohibits me from dwelling on them, but I must not forget to mention thai; Miss Turner's rendering of the ' Swanee River ' was really splendid. Mr B. M. Gubb officiated at the harmonium for the ■evening. After the singing of another hymn, .the meeting terminated.
