EDUCATIONAL.

Mb Patterson, bookseller, is spoken of as a candidate for the City Schools Committee. Are you asleep, Wildman ? The Educational Institute is to meet next year at Ghristohurch. Our Auckland teachers will shine when they go South. Mr Haebison, after being praised for his addres3 by the Star, acknowledged the Herald's graceful compliment that he was no orator. Mr J. Gk L. Scott, North Canterbury, is President of the Educational Institute for the current year ; Mr H. Worthington, Auckland, is secretary, and Mr Grundy treasurer. At the Institute dinner, after being duly primed, Sir Q. M. O'Jiorke made the profound remark that ' elementary education is the foundation of all education.' Strange that no one ever thought of this before. Eev. Mr Coates deplores irregular school attendance, but objects to the police being asked to « run in ' the truantß. A small objeotion, perhaps ; but Mr Coates knows how to compel attendance without the aid of the men in blue. The dialogue between the retiring member and the O.M. is unfortunately crowded out, and Mr Crawley and Miss Crouchy will, we hope, bear their seclusion with meekness and patience. Other comments re the meeting of Educational Institute have also to undergo a temporary reserve. The inferiority of the Auckland teachers, when compared with the Southerners, was painfully evident to everyone who was present at the meeting or read the reports of the speeches. Our ' experts ' and ' higher teaohers ' appeared a very ramshackle lot, with the exception of one or two.
