-At the Mayor's ball, at Ballarat recently, whilst a polka, was being danced, a young lady fell apparently in a faint. She was taken to the ladies room, and died within three minutes Her name was Miss Alice McKissock, and she was a sis er of Mrs J Williams, wife of the secretary of Ballarat Woollen Mill. -

—Professor Fischer, who is about to close his dancing classes for the season, is going to give a children's Fancy Dress Ball, which promises to be a very brilliant affair. It is to take place on Wednesday next, 14th inst., in the Masonic Hall Princes-street, Auckland. Dancing to commence for children at 7 p.m., and for adults at 9 p.m.

—With regard to the Terpischorean successes of the past week, Mr A. W. Hurry of Newton, writes : A most enjoyable social in aid of the Conveht,r o f St. Joseph, Surrey Hills, was held on Tuesday evening, July 30th, at St. George's Hall, Newton. There were about 60 couples present, and the music was supplied by Miss Keenan and Mr McCormish (pianist and violinst). The M.C.'s were Messrs Wright and Spinks ; and the programme comprised 18 dances in addition to 8 extras. About 100 spectators were present. The refreshments throughout the evening were supplied by ladies interested in the success of the entertainment. The costumes of the ladies were_ charmingly attractive. Among those especially noticeable may be mentioned : Mrs Brooks, black velvet ; Miss Peace, pale blue ; Miss Condon, pale blue and cream ; Miss Phelan, black lace and silk; Miss O'Neil, white and pale blue; Mrs Eynon, black satin and lace ; Miss Fairweather, white and pale pink; Miss Spinks, cream and navy blue plush jacket : Miss Casey, pale blue ; Miss Clarkson, lovely ' black lace costume, and pearls; Miss E. Clarkson, dark green dress, cream lace blouse ; Miss Long, white and pale blue ; Miss Danzey, black cachemire ; Misses Kearney, peacock blue costumes, light gloves ; Miss O'Hanlan, pretty cream cachemjre; Miss M. Long, stylish brown eachemire. The gathering was most enjoyable and it did not terminate until past midnight.

—On Thursday evening, August Ist, a Fancy Dress Ball was held at the Choral Hall under the auspices of Mrs Sowerby and Miss Isaacs. There were about SO couples present, and the character costumes were elegant and recheroJie in the extreme. The hall was beautifully decorated with flags, bannerettes, fern and floral devices. Messrs Bartley and Hannken officiated as violinist and pianist ; and the mu&ic was all that could be desired. An excellent repast had been prepared for the occasion. Among the guests especially noticeable may be mentioned : — Miss Buchanan as Sweet Girl Graduate ; Miss M. Phillips, Masherette ; Miss Sowerby, Maid of the Mill; Mrs Sowerby, Old English Lady 16th Century ; Miss Wolfe, Greek Lady ; Miss Ellis, Undine ; Miss Ringwood, Maori Girl ; Miss Clapcott, Spanish Girl ; Mrs Nichol, Portia ; Miss Wildband, 8.A. ; Mrs Dr Bond, Hospital Nurse ; and Miss A. Clark, Eoman Lady. Evening dress : Ladies— The Misses Coffey, Howard, Isaac, Hooper, Laird, Pittar, and Morrin. Gentlemen.— Mr A. H. Busby, Corporal of Artillery; Mr Chambers, Earl Mountararat ; Mr Cohen, Japanese Soldier; Mr Moir, Earl Tololler; Mr Harris, Knight of the Middle Ages ; Messrs Phillips and Curtis, Corsican Brothers ; Mr Jackson Palmer, Eobin Hood; Mr M. Me Callum, Cricketer ; Mr Peacock, Bairister ; and Mr C. Kenderdine, Jockey. Evening Dress : — Messrs Laird, Hooper, D. Eoss, Carminer, Cashel, Howard, Kenderdine, and Dr. Hooper. It was a brilliant and fashionable assembly and may be regarded as one of the prettiest socials of the season.
