DOCTOR AND PATIENT,

I was suffering from, a sore throat a few days ago. A lady caller, noticing that I was under the weather, inquired what the matter was. I informed her that it was a sore throat, not very bad, but just enough to be aggravating. Says she : I 1 can give you a recipe that 1 got from Dr . I had an awful sore throat and I could hardly swallow, but it cured me in one night. I have the prescription in my bag,, here it is— no ; that's a recipe for cake— let's see, " live yards cretonne," ha ! ha! that's my shopping list. Dear me, I can't never find anything when I want it. Oh ! here it is. I knew I wrote it down. Now copy it; I wouldn't lose it for the world. Listen : Sal. S-a-1 ; got that ?' < Yes.' 'Sal. two o-z, that means ounces. Sal* two ounces, a-q f'ist— d-i-s-t, one p-t., that's pint. That's all, sal. two ounces, aq. dist. one pint. Now, you get that and it will cure you right off, it did me.' 'No doubt it is good. How much did the druggist charge you for the prescription P 1 ' Only a dollar, one dollar ; it is worth more than that ; my throat was swelled so I couldn't swallow anything— oh! it says on here ' gargle ; ' you gargle your throat every little while. There, you get that put up and you are cured.' ' I think my mother used to make me gargle my throat with the same stuff. I'll make some and try it.' ' Why, can you make it ?' 'Certainly. Oh ! theold humbug,' and she went home mad because she had paid a dollar for a cent's wortii of salt and water.
