' Whar'd yer git dat mule, Zeb ?' said a colored man to a friend the other day. ' Bought 'im.' ' Why don't yer feed him ? Dat mule's so po' he won't hoi' shucks.' ' Can't 'ford ter feed dis mule. I bought 'im on credit. Ef I eber gits 'im paid fur I's gwine ter gin 'im er hankit dat'll open his eyes. He's got two marsters now, an' s'long's he don't know which is 'sponsiblfr his stomick's gwine ter feel mighty lonesome.'
