SECOND ANNUAL BALL OF THE DEVONPORT NAVAL ARTILLERY.

The second annual ball of the Devonport Naval Artillery, eventuated at the Devonport Hall, North Shore, on Tuesday evening, and was a complete and unqualified success. The hall was gaily decorated with flags, weapons of war, evergreens, etc., for the occasion, and presented a very imposing and animated, appearance. The local officers of the company, Captain Fenton, Lieut. Dacre, and Petty Officers Wynyard. Slattery, Sibbin, and Woods were present in full dress uniform, as also were Lieut. Parker (Auckland Navals), Captain Morpeth, Lieuts. McKenzie and Miller (Ponsonby Navals), Captain Inglis, Lieutenants Grant and Holroyd (Auckland Coastguards), and Captain Payne (of the ' A 'Battery of Artillery). The members of the corps also wore their uniforms, and lent considerable eclat to the occasion. Messrs Hanncken Bros.' band supplied the music, and to its melodious strains dancing was kept up with vigor until the wee sma' hours of Wednesday morning. During the evening Miss J. Corcoran sang with exquisite taste ' Grand Ma's Wedding,' and was heartily applauded. We append a list of the principal dresses worn on the occasion : — rMiss M. Fenton, shot silk, with cardinal trimmings ; Miss L. Martin, black silk, with silver trimmings ; Miss Isabella Martin, black cashmere, trimmed with brocaded satin ; Miss M. Pitts, white muslin and pink satin ; Miss K. Brown, white satin, trimmed with lace to match; Mrs C. Bailey, junr., green cashmere, trimmed with cardinal lace ; Miss A. Hawkeswood. pale blue nun's veiling, with moss roses and trimmings to match ; Miss Camwell, pink sateen; Miss J. Corcoran, lavender silk, trimmed with white lace; Miss Piper, pale blue nun's veiling, with feathering to match ; Miss A. Fenton, red cashmere, trimmed with cardinal to match ; Mrs Pick, black satin, with white flowers; Miss M, Gerrard, black cashmere, with black beading trimmings ; Miss H. Pitts, blue sateen skirt, black velvet polonaise ; Miss K. Hawkesford, chocolate satin skirt, with green bodice; Miss M. Pitts, pale blue feathered muslin, with tartan sash ; Miss Woods, brown cashmere skirt, velvet bodice of the same colour, and blue sash; Miss M. Brown, white muslin, trimmed with lace to match ; Miss L. Patterson, navy blue velvet and brocaded silk drapery; Miss McLean, black cashmere, with cardinal trimmings ; Miss A. Gerrard, cream flowered muslin, pink sash; Miss Smith, pale blue figured sateen, trimmed with lace ; Mrs Eoberts, cream satin, trimmed with lace of a darker shade ; Miss Turbet, pink figured sateen, with trimmings to match ; Mrs E. Duder, light brown silk, brocaded bodice, with lace to match ; Miss E. Davis, black velvet, trimmed with silk of the same colour ; Mrs F. Duder, navy blue satin, black skirt; Miss C. Dacre, lavender silk, trimmed with lace to match ; Miss Corcoran, brown cashmere, trimmed with figured sateen. Before concluding, we think a word of praise raust be bestowed upon the Ball-room Committee — Messrs Douglas, A. Bartley, J. M. Sibbin, and F. Bartley — for the excellent manner in which they carried out the arrangements connected with their department; to the Decorating Committee — Messrs Wynyard, Williams, Spinley, Gouk, Brown, and Duder — for the excellent judgment and taste displayed in the decoration of the building; and last, but not least, to the Hon. Secretary (Mr P. H. Wood), to whom the success of the Second Anniversary Ball of the Navals is in a great measure due. The caterers (Messrs Lillewall Bros.) must not be forgotten, for the refreshments were plentiful, and of a recherche character.
