USEFUL NEEDLEWREK. CROCHET OPERA HOODS, THREE PATTERNS.
Sortie dv Bal, or Opera Cloak. — This is worked in Shetland wool with a bone hook, No." 12. It can be done all white if preferred, but the pattern given is for stripes. Make a chain 28in. long, and work treble in each loop with white. 2nd row — Now do 3 treble 1 chain alternately, working always into the holes of the preceding 1 row. *Work lin of white, lin coloured, lin white, then one row of coloured. Eepeat from*. When the work is 3yds lOin long, do a row of treble to match commencement. Make a border all round obout l|-in wide, and add a fringe or not as preferred. To make it up, fold back 4in lengthways, and tack ligholy down; this is the upper part of the cloak, plood.— Fold the knitting in half, and sew the two upper edges together for half an inch, at a distance of 17 inches from the doubled part. Fasten a tassel "at the sewing, and another at the bottom of the hood. Strings can be added by. putting the ribbon under the folded part, and drawing the ends through the or ribbon can be quilted round end ends; left. Opera Hood.— (2oz of the palest pink Shetland wool.)— This is a very light.shape, and can be worn without disarranging the hair; it is also most becoming. Make a chain two yards long, and for,,9iri deep work 3 treble and 1 chain .'• alternately. Put a border all round of 1 .^-single, 1 double, 2 treble, 3 chain, 2 treble,
1 double, 1 single. All round the part which goes at the face do a second row of scallops close behind the other, so as to make a fullness. Add a large tassel at each end, drawing them up to a point. Opera Hood, or Kerchief. — (2oz white Shetland wool, loz pink, and bone crochet-hook, No. 12.) — Make a chain of 3, unite, do 3 chain, 1 treble, 4 times, into the hole. Work in rounds, increasing at each corner in every round ; every round is alike, 3 treble, into the whole beneath, and 1 chain. When it measures 12 inches across do five rounds of pink, then 7 of white, then 15 of pink, making the last [two rounds in scallops by working 12 into 1 hole. This fichu can be worn on the head, as well as on the neck for evening, thus : Make it a larger size than the above, fold it crossways, not quite in the middle, and bring the point to the front, join the points by a bow of ribbon, and run ribbon round the straight part to draw it close to the neck.
