SOCIAL GATHERING AT HAKARAU.
The tea, concert, and dance given by the Misses Tuttin and others in the Hakarau Hall on the 24th inst., in aid of erecting an English Church at the parsonage, Mangawai, was a great success, and credit is due to thejadies who so ably provided the trays. The concert was all that could be desired. Dancing commenced at 10 p.m., and was kept up with spirit until morning. Mr Smith ably presided at the piano, and Mr J. Sarah efficiently performed the duties of M.C. The following is a description of the dresses worn : — Miss M. Stewart (the belle of the ball), pale blue, cream lace ; Miss Brown, pale blue silk skirt, satin body ; Miss Baldro, pale green polonaise, cream skirt; Miss K. Stewart, cream dress, with scarlet trimmings ; Miss Stewart, black sateen body, black skirt ; Miss Hastie, lemon silk, with cardinal trimmings ; Miss McMillin, black cashmere ; Miss D. Sarah, white book muslin; Miss Sarah, navy blue sateen, salmon coloured trimmings ; Miss Caineron, black velvet and cardinal flowers, pink satin skirt. Mr Bowman's dancing was much admired. The honour of beau was divided between Professor Lambert and Gen. W. Stewart.
