■ Considerable excitement was caused in town on Tuesday when it became known that a charge of rape had been laid by Mr Ehrenfried, the wellknown brewer of Grahamstown, against Mr W. W. Ghidgeon. Both the parties have hitherto moved in the best circles, at the Thames, aim have been on terms of intimate friendship, Mr -Gudgeon being a frequent visitor frt /Mr Ehreinv fried's house. It is stated that on^trij^gy of the alleged criminal assault Mr Ehrenfried left home, on a visit to Auckland, but returned rather suddenly by way of Tafcaru, where he landed in \ boat, and on.arrival at his home becam^ftaware of certain circumstances which induced- him to lay an information against Grudgeon for rape. The accused, who is a married" man, has been released on bail.
