PASSING THE PLATE.
The scheme for the abolition of the passing of " the plate " in Auckland churches, and the substitution of voluntary contribution boxes appears yet on its trial in the experiments recently made. At the Wellesley-street Baptist Church, it was announced on a recent Sunday that, though the congregations were, if possible, larger than ever, the contributions did not exhibit the same characteristic. The lofty ideal set up may possibly be realised in " The Coming Race," but taking human nature, as it is, and not as ifc might be, there is a " rift in the lute." Church Finance Committees know perfectly well, as a hard matter of fact, that 80 per cent, of the church, going classes will pass a private voluntary contribution box unheeded, though " the eye of the Almighty is upon them," but they will not suffer " the plate " to pass without its quota because churchwarden Brown, elder Jones, deacon Robinson, or steward Smith has '• his eyes about him !"
