WEST BY EAST.
"the counterfeit presentment of tavo BROTHRS." (" M r West performed both the King and the Ghost." Vide report of the representation of " Hamlet " in tlio Theatre Boyal last week.) Sweet actor of a double part, True mimic power is thine ; Cleaving to nature in thine art, With instinct nigh divine. One moment gliding on tlie stage In weird and ghastly form ; Tlie next, astir with sensual rage — A mean and grovelling worm. Noiv, standing witli " the front of Jove," With godhead's seal displayed ; Next, wallowing in incestuous love, By coward fears betrayed. Old Thrspis, if lie now could live, And start his trade afresh, Might not such true " presentment " give Of " spirit " and of " flesli." Oh, beastly King ! oh, blessed Gt-host I Methinks it were no fun If your identity were lost When thus " rolled into one !" But hush thy fears, thou kingly shade, And thou, "licentious beast !" Distinctly ye are each pourtrayed, Thanks to the actor's polished art, Who, working out each separate part, Is facing West by East ! The Black Knigkht.
