If poor Garrard had a fault it Avas a disregard for the misfortunes of others. When he ran doAvnthe " Isabella Pratt " his behaviour to the luckless OAvner Avas almost brutal. The "Albion" had smashed the poor old chap's boat to smithereens, ruined him, and avcll nigh taken his life ; yet, the skipper's conduct to him, even in Court, was strikingly callous and over-bearing. With his passengers Captain Garrard Avas immensely popular. He had an easy jovial manner that Avas very "fetching," and made him "hail fellow well met" Avith everybody. Despite quite an unusual number of accidents, Garrai cl stood high in his employer's books, aud Avas promoted strangely fast. It seemed, indeed, as if his conduct in the catastrophies Avith Avhich he was associated gave the Company more, rather than less, confidence in him. After the wreck of the "Tanpo,"he Avas made master of the "Albion," and the running doAvn of the "Isabella Pratt" led to his being promoted from the "Albion" to the "Tararua."
