Though Captain Garrard has got the name of being a very unlucky skipper, it is a fact that this fatal accident is the first for which (morally speaking) he can be made personally responsible. When the "Taupo" ran ashore Captain Cromarty Avas on the bridge giving the orders, and Garrard could no more have prevented the steamer being .vrecked than a common sailor or a passenger could. An equally good excuse is made for him re the running doAvn of the " Isabella Pratt." This accident occurred betAveen here and Tauranga. Captain Garrard was asleep beloAv at the time, and it is admitted on all hands that he had every right to be asleep just then. The captain of the ' ' Glenelg " always takes his nap in precisely the same place, and surely he ought to knoAV the dangers between here and the Bay of Plenty.
