The unfortunate Avomen Avere left almost destitute, and for years heard nothing of the husband and father. At length, by the merest accident, Foodie was traced to Auckland and discovered to be prospering, and to have entered into the bonds oi matrimony Avith another Mrs. Foodie, by Avhom, it may he mentioned, he has a large family. The unhappy women in Eng land Avere poverty-stricken, and could, of course do nothing to punish him, but they A\ r rote, begging for a little assistance, and imploring Foodie to help them. " This," said the daughter in her letter " is the last time I shall ever appeal to you, and if you do not ansAver it, my Avorst Avish is, that you may suffer as we have suffered." To this agonising appeal Foodie responded Avith two potmds, and a lying statement that he Avas not as .veil oft* as they might think him.
