LAKE TIKITAPU

TIKITAPU, or the Blue Lake, is a sheet of water of deep blue colour, surrounded Avith a high background of bare hills, evidently the sides pf an old volcanic crater. The water on near approach appears clear, and the bottom is streAved with beautiful Avhite pumice pebbles, mixed Avith dark stones. The natives have a legend AA r hich represents the lake as the home of a terrible monster, and they' hold it in great dread. There is no visible outlet to the basin, and Kaiteriria Lake, or Rotakahi, AAdiich is separated from Tikitapu only by a small ridge, is at a much loAver elevation. Some subterranean channel probably connects the two.
