DECREASE IN CROPS.

DOMINION GRASSES. REDUCTION OF 28 PER CENT. WELL BELOW AVERAGE. A sharp decrease in the crops ol 1 grasses, clovers and lucerne harvested for seed, hay or ensilage in New Zealand was recorded in 1936-37, according to the annual report just issued on agricultural and pastoral production. The report states that the area of grasses and clovers cut for seed fell from 134,405 acres in 1935-36 to 96,577 acres in 1936-37, a reduction of 28 per cent., and usually low average yields contributed to an even greater fall in the aggregate quantity of seed, the drop being 53 per cent. The area and production of grasses, clovers and lucerne cut for bay and cn

silage were also less than in 1935-36, although well up to the level of other recent years. In field crops the area harvested or fed off was below the average of the five preceding seasons.
