COAL MINERS' DISPUTE.
POSITION IN WAIKATO.
QUESTION OF PAYMENTS
STATEMENT BY SECRETARY
[By Telegraph.—Press Association] WELLINGTON, March 25.
Mr. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Coalminers' Association, in an interview to-day in reference to the stoppage of work in the Waikato mines, said as to Mr. McLaglan's statement that the payment of double shift rate had always been mado under similar circumstances to those existing in tho Waikato, if that could be proved, Mr. MeLaglan would be entirely justified in his demand that payment should continue.
Mr. Bishop said his inquiries made personally of every manager in the Waikato district met with the unanimous denial that payment had been made at any time under similar circumstances.
As the men had now intimated they were willing to return to work prior to the matter being further dealt with, arrangements weuld be made as early as possible for the matter to be discussed between tho representatives of the two organisations, said Mr. Bishop.
