NEARLY DROWNED.
WAIHI BEACH INCIDENT. BATHER BROUGHT ASHORE. IN UNCONSCIOUS CONDITION. [Special to "Star"] WAIHI,. Feb. 16. A fortunate escape, from drowning was experienced by Mr; L. C., Ziegler, aged 23, an electrician,, of Pacrou. whfin lie was carried out in tin; turf at Waihi Beach yesterday afternoon. Mr. Ziegler, who has been spending a holiday at Waihi Beach with hin wife and family, went for a swim at about 4.45 o'clock, when there was an incoming tide and a moderate surf. large wave carried. Mr. Ziegler, who is not a strong swimmer, well out of his depth, and the current carried hiiii further from the shore. His plight was noticed, by Mr. G. C. Hicks, of Eeinuera, who was bathing in the vicinity. Mr. Hicks supported him until the arrival of Mr. H. Cropp, a resident of the beach, and the 'two men were able to bring Mr. Ziegler ashore.
Members or the Waih'i Beach Surf Club applied artificial' respiration for over an hour before Mr. Zieglcr was restored to consciousness. Oxygen treatment was also applied by Dr. F. G. Barrowclough.
