TAIRUA ROAD.
WILL BE RECONSIDERED. By Hon. R. Semple. LETTER TO MR. J. THORN. QUESTION OF MAINTENANCE. Mr. J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, who has consistently advocated the Kauac-ranga-Tairua Road, is in receipt of the following letter from the lion. R. Semple, Minister for Public Works: —
“I have carefully considered your letter of the 11th October, in which you
have given me further views on the question of constructing the proposed Kauaeranga to Tairua Road. As you will recollect my earlier decision to defer this work for review later was forced upon me by reason of two facts, the first of which was that the annual Estimates had already been prepared and all available funds absorbed, and the second rested in the uncertain position regarding maintenance.
“As you have stated the Thames County Council has agreed to pass the customary maintenance resolution obtained by my Department before new metalling is carried out, but even so it would seem, from the position which already obtains in the Tairua Riding, that the question of maintenance would still represent a difficulty.
“In any case a heavy roading programme has already been decided upon for the financial year, and I am afraid further consideration of this proposal will have to be deferred at least until next financial yera, but I will be quite prepared to go into the . question again before the neslt Estimates are prepared/’
