SMOKING IN BED.
MAORI'S SEVERE INJURIES
NIGHTCLOTHES BURNED OFF. INCIDENT AT TOKOMARU BAY. [By Telegraph.—Press Association] GISBOILXE, June 17. Serious burns were suffered by a middle-aged Maori, Mr. Sidney Tawhai Kaui, of Tokomaru Bay, when his night attire caught alight and burned off his body. It is surmised that he fell asleep while smoking in bed. A woman passer-by witnessed the plight of Mr. Kaui, who, on becoming aware of his predicament, rushed outside. By this time his clothes wcro ablaze. Neighbours ran to his assistance, but all his clothing had been burned. Mr. Kaui was taken to To Puia Hospital, where he was found to be suffering from severe burns to the upper part of the body, face and head. Although the burns must have been exceedingly painful, Mr. Kaui did not lose consciousness, and walked to the waiting car and then from the car to a bed on arrival at the hospital, keeping up a conversation in the meantime.
