WATER SUPPLY.
«. SCHEME ON PLAINS. SUGGESTED EXTENSION. ENGINEERS REPORT. The question of supplying water from the East District supply scheme to part of the Kercpeehi Block Extension, was reported on to the Hauraki Plains County Council yesterday by the engineer for the water scheme, Mr. E. F. Adams. The governing factor of any available supply was the dry summer capacity of the Apakura stream, said Mr. Adams. The problem of water supply, outside the East District, would, in the near future, embrace at least the 2200 acres of the Kercpeehi Block, together with 2300 acres of tho Kerepeehi Block Extension, making in all 4500 acres of firstclass land requiring 90,000 gallons of water daily for stock and domestic use. Mr. Adams considered 700,000 gallons daily to be a fair and safe estimate for the supply value of the Apakura Stream under unduly dry conditions, together with a reasonable spill over for the stream bed below the headworks. The position was that the Council was committed to 790,000 gallons daily from the Apakura Stream, a stream rated at 920,000 gallons daily in dry summer, and that the Council held a diversion consent from tho Thames County Council in respect of the Canoe Creek, in which there was enough dry summer water to make up the calculated deficiency in the Apakura Stream caused by the Thames County Council's claim on that stream.
Mr. Adams was satisfied, he stated, that the Apakura was fully as efficient as a source of supply as he' considered it in the first place, but he had no reason to place greater value on it. If this view was sound, the only water available from this stream when the East District was being supplied under very dry summer conditions, was that quantity which during each 24 hours inevitably remained unused and thus it would be necessary to tank outside of peak draw hours if the Kerepeehi Block was to be supplied by the dry summer •flow of the Apakura and Canoe Creek. Mr. Adams, continuing, dealt with possible ways of tanking the water.
