EFFECT QF 40-HOUR WEEK. A wincy' curiosity of the 40-hour week has been its application to the hours of many of those employed in the licensed trade, says an Auckland daily. In some cases the old half-day holiday has become a full day, but in others, the working hours have been re-arranged. The variations fU'e such that many barmen keep a list of duty hours, for at first it is quite impossible to remember them, every day being different. A typical example is the Saturday hours in some hotels, namely, 7 to 8.30, 11.15 to 12.30, 1 to 2.30, and 4 to 6.13 p.m.

'•lt takes a bit of getting used to," said one employee, ''but it is nice to be able to get out for a spell of fresh air in the middle of the morning. I hadn't seen Albert Park during working hours for oYer 20 years, and the early morning break is a real novelty. It's like lutving a half-day at breakfast time."
